Welcome to Australia

50m 1999

TRAILER

The documentary starts with an advertising about Sydney 2000 Olympics taking place a year afterwards: a symbol of success and pride for the country. But behind the façade, many native Aborigines are excluded from Australian sports at all levels, despite their potential talent. The movie then explores how Aboriginal citizens were historically ostracised, and still are, in many ways: massacres when the British army conquered the island, seclusion, poverty, diseases, children being separated from their families, etc. People interviewed include Aborigines, historian Colin Tatz (author of the book "Obstacle Race: Aborigines in Sport"), doctors, etc. Documentation includes reports from Amnesty International and "Bringing them home", a report about the infant removals. Presenter and writer John Pilger also provides his personal insight since he was born and raised in Australia.
